The abnormal psychology
The abnormal psychologyAbnormality has become one of the most essential components in unhomogeneous movies such as The Dark Knight. The detective thinks The Dark Knight includes numerous of characters that would be diagnose with some type of psychological disorder. However, the researcher examines Batman to envision the type of psychological disorder unc all overed in the movie The Dark Knight. The reason why the researcher chose to examine Batman is because not often people think of Batman as having a psychological disorder, but evidence from the movie suggests that he does confirm some type of mental disorder. The purpose of this paper is to gain knowledge near how psychiatrist, clinicians, and disorders analyst diagnose and treat different types of psychological disorders. The researcher leave alone low give a brief synopsis of The Dark Knight. Next, the researcher will evaluate Batman in preparation in diagnosing him with a psychological disorder. Then, the researcher wil l diagnose Batman with a psychological disorder. Finally, the researcher will determine treatment options for Batman.SynopsisIn the movie The Dark Knight, Batman faces his arch nemesis, the Joker. Batman along with Commissioner James Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent unite to take on criminal offense on the streets of Gotham City. In the beginning, the three appears to be effective, but they soon find themselves prey to one of the Jokers diabolical plans to bring forth havoc to Gotham City. The Joker and a mob of men, wearing clown masks, break into a bank. One by one, the clowns begin to kill for each one other to get a superr assign of the money. After each clown was killed, only one clown was left standing. This clown reveled himself as The Joker. The Joker then places a grenade into the bankers mouth and boards the bus, leaving a string attached to the pin. As The Joker leaves, the pin pops out and gas surrounded the bank. The Joker joins a long line of school buses l eaving the photo as the police arrive. Later Commissioner Gordon and Batman arrive at the bank the Joker held up to inspect the scene (Newgen, 2008). Throughout the movie, The Joker went on several rampages and was suitable to take District Attorney Harvey Dent and his girlfriend, Officer Attorney Rachel Dawes, captive into two different locations. They both(prenominal) were tied up and strapped to explosives that were expected to detonate in a short amount of time. The Joker gives Batman the locations of the two, saying that he only has time to save one of them. Batman chose to go after Rachel, while Commissioner Gordon went after Harvey Dent. As Batman arrives at the address, he finds Harvey Dent instead. Prior to Batman saving Harvey Dent, a half of his face caught on fire. Meanwhile, Commissioner Gordon arrives at the other address. Before he could enter into the door, the building exploded killing Rachel (Newgen, 2008).After the death of Rachel, Harvey Dent became ruthless and took on the name Two-Face. Two-Face and The Joker teamed up for a brief segment of the movie. Two-Face seeks to uncover the individuality of the cop that kidnapped Rachel. He learns that Detective Reamierz was the cop that orchestrated Rachels kidnapping. He then killed Detective Reamierz with a single shot to the head. At the same time, two large ferries were set for departure to get away from the chaos. One take inhabited with criminals the other ferry packed with innocent citizens. Out of nowhere, The Jokers voice is heard from over the loudspeaker in both ferries. He informs them that each ferry is set with explosives. Each ferry has the detonator for the other ferry. The Joker threatens both the criminals and the innocents citizens that one ferry must destroy the other ferry by midnight are both ferries would be destroyed. Neither passenger of the ferries chose to use the detonator to destroy the other ferry. serious as The Joker was about to set the detonator, Batman f ires a dart, knocking the detonator out of his hand. Batman left to find Two-Face, while the SWAT team captures the Joker (Newgen, 2008). estimation The researcher thinks Batman is one of the greatest and darkest comic book characters ever created. Batmans alter ego, Bruce Wayne, is a multibillionaire that is the President and CEO of Wayne Enterprise. As Batman, he dedicates his life protecting Gotham from criminals. wherefore did Bruce Wayne turn into Batman? One must analyze the origin of Bruce Wayne. Bruce Wayne is the son of Doctor Thomas Wayne and his wife Martha Wayne. According to Batman Origins comic book, Batman experienced two events in his childishness that traumatized him for life. His first traumatic experience was when he accidentally fell into a pit below Wayne Manor. The pit leads into a cave system full of bats. For geezerhood afterwards, he would have hallucinations of a large bat repeatedly. The other tragic event happen when Bruce and his parents were walking back home from a movie. Out of nowhere, a mugger shot both his parents. The mugger ran before the authorities arrived. The families butler, Alfred Pennyworth, took in Bruce and became his legal Guardian. Since this moment, Bruce Wayne vowed to fight against crime. This is the reason why Bruce Wayne became Batman (Newgen, 2008). The investigator evaluates Batman by using a technique called realistic observation. The naturalistic observation is a method clinicians uses to observe clients in their everyday environments (Cramer, 2009). The researcher examines both Batman and his alter ego Bruce Wayne by observing his behavior and actions in the movie. Batman interpersonal style appears to be hostile and guarded. In the movie, Batman rarely associated with other characters. The tone of Batman voice leads the researcher to believe that he has a lot of resentment built inside. As Bruce Wayne, he was seen to be sociable. He was seen escorting one of his female friends to a social gathering . An important element of the movie is Bruce Waynes turmoil over his identity. He believes that being Batman was preventing him from having a normal life. Later in the movie, he accepts that Gotham needs Batman to protect the citizens from criminals. Batman and his alter ego Bruce Wayne are intelligent and skillful. In the movie, the researcher views both of them using advance equipment to track down criminals. The researcher tends to believes that Batman and Bruce Wayne have different emotions. Bruce Wayne frequently smiles in the movie. However, Batman rarely or never seen smiling, this perhaps is an indicator that he is never happy. Diagnosis The researcher uses the DSM-IV criteria to determining the psychological disorder Batman posses. The DSM-IV is the current version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (APA, 2002). The researcher believes Batman is suffering with comorbidity or having more than than one psychological disorders occurring at the same t ime. The researcher diagnoses Batman with having posttraumatic punctuate and dissociative identity disorders. The researcher believes Batman have a serious case of posttraumatic stress disorder because of his reaction from his parents death. Post-Traumatic Stress is an anxiety problem that develops in some people after extremely traumatic events, such as an accident (APA, 2002). A person with Post-Traumatic Stress whitethorn suffer with re-experiencing the traumatic event, avoidance, reduced responsiveness, increased arousal, anxiety, and guilt. Batman often have flashbacks when he passes the scene where his parents where murdered. Often his enemies would lure him to the grime of the traumatic event. When possible, he tries to avoid the scene. Batman also feels guilty because of the death of his parents. He revenges his parents death by keeping Gotham safe from criminals (Newgen, 2008). Finally, from observing Batmans actions in the movie, the researcher believes he has dissociati ve identity disorder. Dissociative Identity Disorder is having two or more separate identities that may not always be aware of each others thoughts, feelings, and behavior. The symptoms for dissociative identity disorder are the presence of two or more distinct identities or record states, control of the persons behavior recurrently taken by at least two of these identities or temperament states, and an inability to recall important personal info (Cramer, 2009). As mentioned before, Batman and his alter ego Bruce Wayne have two different personalities. From watching the movie, the researcher observes Batman being bitter and impatient. However, Bruce Wayne was more impassive and tranquil. Recalling Batmans history, he has experience moments of forgetting the locations of the Batcave (Newgen, 2008).Treatment A combination of cognitive and do drugs therapy would dish with Batmans posttraumatic stress disorder. Clinicians use cognitive therapy to assist patients with identifying an d changing their negative thinking of the event. According to a previous case study, cognitive therapy has three goals. The first goal is for patients to identify how the event affects their daily function. The next goal is to help the patient reduce experiencing the event. Normally, clinicians use drug therapy to reduce the occurrence of nightmares, panic attacks, and flashbacks. on with the drug therapy, clinicians use techniques such as allowing patients to write a story to describe and elaborate on the event. The final goal is to assist patients with forgetting about sealed images, in Batman case the gun used to murder his parents (Ehlers Clark, 2008). Similar to posttraumatic stress disorder, healer uses psychotherapy to help patients with dissociative identity disorder. Clinicians usually try to help the clients recognize fully the nature of their disorder, recover the gaps in their memory, and integrate their sub-personalities into one functional personality (Hunter, 1997 ). Typically, therapists begin the treatment by bonding with the primary personality and then with each of the sub-personalities. To help Batman therapist would bond with Bruce Wayne because that is Batmans primary personality. Secondly, therapist would help Bruce recover missing pieces of their past. Once Bruce recalls the moments of his childhood that lead him to become Batman, the therapist would finally help him merge the different sub-personalities into a single, integrated identity or a fusion. When the two identities merges together, further therapy is needed to maintain the complete personality and to teach social and coping skills that may help prevent later dissociations (Cramer, 2009).Conclusion After observing Batman behavior in the movie, the researcher discovers he may have posttraumatic stress disorder and dissociative identity disorder. He was diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder because he displayed the following symptoms nightmares and flashbacks, avoidance , reduced responsiveness, and guilt from his parents murder. The reason why the researcher diagnoses Batman with dissociative identity disorder is that he displays two distinct identities or personality states and suffers from ordinary forgetfulness. The two disorders have similar treatment methods. They both calculate towards changing his behavior or thinking. Clinicians uses cognitive therapy to treat posttraumatic stress disorder and uses psychotherapy to treat dissociative identity disorder. Overall, the researcher obtained a better taste of how clinicians diagnose and treat patients. One limitation was that the movie The Dark Knight never fully captures Bruce Waynes childhood experiences that lead up to him being Batman. However, the prequel to the movie Batman Begins elaborates more on the transitions. Another limitation was, since Batman is a fictional character, the researcher was only able to use observation from watching the movie. The finally limitation was that the re searcher was not able to find if Batman was currently getting treatment for his conditions. In future projects, the investigator will do further examination on Batman, to find information about his current treatment status.ReferencesAPA (2002). DSM-IV-TR. The benefits and risks of Outsourcing
The benefits and risks of OutsourcingIn this chapter, an introduction of query background is given and the objectives and scope of the research argon described. In addition, a general overview of research methodology will be introduced. Fin every last(predicate)y, a brief overview of the dissertation structure is given in consecrate to pre displace an overall picture of the research undertaken. Background of researchOutsourcing is one of the fast growing aspects with a sp terminaling of US$ 3.7 trillion world roomy in 2001 (Clott, 2004). The latest survey conducted by Cap Gemini, Georgia institute of technology, SAP and DHL, it is clear that the usage of 3rd caller logistics (3pl) servicings continues to grow in Latin America, North America, Western Europe and Asia-pacific (Cap Gemini, 2006). Due to globalisation and rapid growth in in comp swot upation technology organisations be eager to develop agonisticalness and responsiveness to customers (Matteo, 2003). Lieb and Randall (1996) specify 3pl to a more detailed extent in particular, the term tercet gear base- party has been explained more clearly. The third party logistics is defined here asA lodge which supplies/coordinates logistics functions across multiple links in the logistics try chain. The fellowship thus acts as a third-party facilitator betwixt the seller/manufacturer (the first-party) and the buyer/user (the secondment-party). The functions the functions performed by the third-party can encom pay the entire logistics process or selected activities with in that process. (p.51).Today well-nigh inter interior(a) logistics suppliers, including freight forwarders, customhouse brokers, ocean and air carriers, promoting themselves as third party logistics providers as they can provide more serve for the movement of international freight. Liebs survey clearly tells that one third of large manufacturing companies in us use third party logistics proceedss and over 60 percent of these fir ms used these redevelopments for above five years (Lieb, 2007). The close relationship in the midst of shippers and carriers could be a benefit for third party providers. One thing is confirmed that, nearly all large multinational companies make use of third party logistics providers (Maltz, 2004).Research problemFrom many researchers point of view (Lee, 2004), Indian 3pl providers are still in an undeveloped state. So it might be tricky for them to survive in the Indian market competing with the foreign players. This research will review the traditional Indian distribution system and analyze the contemporary situations of both Indian and foreign companies like Pantaloons, Reliance, Subhiksha and Wal-Mart. In 2005, India was forecasted as the greatest consumer market opportunity, receiving racyest foreign direct investment (FDI) (Mitra, 2005). The third party logistics in India accounts nearly a quarter of its transportation industry and expected to grow over $ 125 million by 2015 (Srinath, 2006). Currently India sits atop the global sell opportunity. Indias retail industry, the 9th largest globally and valued at $ 330 billion (Kilgore et al. 2007).Reliance, a $ 12 billion giant enterprise run by Mukesh Ambani, plans to diffuse an additional 4000 stores and hypermarkets with a target of $ 22.3 billion in sales by 2012. Wal-mart currently sources corkings of worthy over $ 1.5billion from India, yet to gain access to sell those point of intersections in India. So Wal-Marts joint ventures with Bharti will open doors for multi grass hypermarkets and computer memoryping villages. One of the best approaches to gain competitiveness and improve customer renovation levels is the firms logistical capability. To be competitive, the companies sire to deliver the products quickly and for cast bring cost. Logistics service providers gain momentum after the successful and efficient distribution net spirt of Wal-Mart (Maltz, 2004). On the some other manus, pantaloon is currently Indias largest retailer with more than 140 stores. Its as well as planning to spend $ 1 billion to open 100 big bazaar stores country wide. The Tata group, which runs lifestyle stores and star India bazaar, also opened an electronic goods shop in Mumbai last year. Tata group is planning to open 30 stores by the next year (Sahey and Mohan, 2006).Behind this growth, logistics infrastructure is the main backdrop of the countrys growth. Logistics be in India are 13 percent of gross domestic product compared with 8 percent in the U.S. Indian logistics is combination of road transport companies, railways, air freight companies, ports and shipping companies, as well as 3pl companies. 3pl market in India is least developed and its growth is about 20% per annum. If the logistics be can be reduced from 13% of GDP to 8% of GDP, then the savings would be approximately $ 20 billion. This change will reduces the prices of Indian goods by 4.3% making them more competitive globally. The 3pl revenue and dispatch handling volume registered growth rates of 18.25% and 20.33% respectively in 2003-2004 (Mitra, 2005). sell opportunity opens the doors to reach Indian customers more efficaciously. Hindustan lever, a subsidiary of Unilever and the coca pot go with are extremely successful penetrating in India. The rural population in India is almost 60%. Delivering products to those rural people is most rough task due to the poor transportation and infrastructure facilities. In this situation both the companies above mentioned are successful with their distribution system through with(predicate) logistics service providers to reach each and every part of the country. So all the issues related to transportation infrastructure have badly affected the logistics network in India specifically in equipment casualty of lead time and costs. Anyway, a host of policy changes underway is expected to bring some positive revolution in the Indian transportation envi ronment. In the past few years Indian government focussed on the infrastructure development. The main initiative under this project is the national high way development programme. It will connect all the metros and act as east-west and north-south corridor. So this will boost road transportation in India and good bran-news for the logistics services providers in the country and also for the organisations to reduce costs by using 3pl providers (Mitra, 2005).Aim and objectivesThe purpose of the research is to understand how third party logistics service providers can develop competitive service and improves the service levels of generate chains in Indian retail industry. The objectives of the study can be summarized asTo understand the current situations of Indian domestic 3pl providersTo develop the competitive strategies pursued by the Indian 3pl providersTo find out the impact of the use of the 3pl services on costs, customer satisfaction. On the other hand, the following researc h questions are designed for the achievement of the above research objectives. What kind of distribution systems do the Indian 3pl providers have? What kinds of logistics services are Indian 3pl providers providing? What competitive situation are the Indian 3pl providers facing? What kinds of competitive strategies are the Indian 3pl providers pursuing to achieve competitive advantages? publications reviewThe bring home the bacon chainThe process which integrates coordinates and controls the movement of goods, materials and asseverateation from a supplier to the end customer through a series of intermediate customers is called the supply chain. It bridges the gap between core business aspects of supply and demand. So the supply chain management is the management of buying/sourcing, making, moving and selling activities in a timely manner. Supply chains today are very slow, costly and do not deliver particularly good value to the end customer.Todays markets are much more demanding and information driven with small product cycles, more choice for customers and consumers and increased competition. Costs need to be cut down out of the supply chain and efficiencies increased, as business relationships within the chain shift and competitive advantage becomes sturdyer to come by.The process of planning, implementing and controlling the efficient, cost-effective menstruum and storage of raw materials, in-process inventory, finished goods and related information flow from point of origin to point of consumption for the purpose of conforming to customer requirements.Third party logistics (TPL)The growth of high competition and complex business conditions force organizations to pursue competitive advantages and re-engine their business constantly. Outsourcing logistics to a 3pl provider has been considered as an effective strategy for companies to high service performance and lower operating cost. Lieb and Randall (1996) defined 3pl to a more detailed extent in particula r, the term third-party has been explained more clearly. The third party logistics is defined here asA company which supplies/coordinates logistics functions across multiple links in the logistics supply chain. The company thus acts as a third-party facilitator between the seller/manufacturer (the first-party) and the buyer/user (the second-party). The functions the functions performed by the third-party can encompass the entire logistics process or selected activities with in that process. (p.51).The canonic characteristics of 3pls are to provide customised services and to consider multiple activities, which involve warehousing, distribution, transportation, inventory control, material handling, packaging and inspection (Bolumole, 2001). Here are some of the services offered by 3pls in the present market, according to Sowinski (2005) apply guarantee transportation and transportation procurement.Inventory managementLogistics management and consultingFreight audit and consultingSh ipment tracking and tracingReverse logistics and value added servicesTPL providers are nothing but insti aditive supply chain members. Lambert (1998) defined these supportive members as companies that simply provide resources, knowledge, utilities or assets for the primary members of the supply chain. The new level of usage of 3pl has been defined as logistics alliances. Bagchi and Virum (1998) define logistics alliances asA long-term formal or informal relationship between shippers and logistics providers to render all or a considerable digit of logistics activities for the shipper. (p.193).Under this alliance, 3pl users and providers treat each other as long-term partners. By identifying the characteristics of 3pl providers in various stages, Berglund et al. (1999) intimate that in that reparation have been three phases of development of the 3pl participants. The first phase started from 1980s, with the presence of traditional logistics providers, with the activities involved however transportation or warehousing. The second phase started from 1990s, when a number of network players such as DHL, TNT and FedEx started their logistics services. The third phase started from late 1990s, when a number of players from other areas like information technology, started working with the original logistics providers. In recent years with the dynamic changing and development of supply chain management 3pl providers have moved their focus to strategy development (Hertz Alfredson, 2003). 3pl providers have started to support logistics operations through value-added services and supply chain solution service, which creates abundant opportunities for companies to reduce costs and improve customer satisfaction (Knemeyer et al., 2003 Lieb, 2005).In addition to the services mentioned above, other services offered by 3pl providers, are known as value-added services. These are the services that add a lot of additional value to the products being distributed (Rushton et al. 2000). The major value added services has been summarized by the authors as follows.Specialist or niche service, where the operation is specifically designed for a particular products.Time reliable services, which are setup to support the just-in-time (JIT) operations of major manufacturers.Assembly, which is fulfilled by third-party distributor.Repacking, this is another area of value-added development, like a torch together with battery.Refurbishment in the un pieceed if current environmental legislation many manufacturers have endeavoured to re-engineer their products so that parts from some used products can be reused in new products.Packaging draw collect packaging for reuses or disposal. (p.62).A research conducted recently by Hertz and Alfredson presented the strategical development of 3pl providers (Hertz Alfredson, 2003). tally to Lai (2004) at that place are four types of 3pl providers from the resource based view of the firm. Each type of provider exhibiting differ ent service capabilities and service performance. Also different types of logistics service providers adopt different service strategies to respond to different market segmentsLogistics outsourcing is simply a make-or-buy decision based on cost efficiency by increasing competitiveness and complexity (Christopher, 2005). A company may pursue logistics outsourcing for the following reasons,Own lack of logistics experienceDesire to focus on core competencyDifficulty in maintaining communication and information technology up to dateSahay and Mohan (2006).Outsourcing can give a company proper access to resources, equipment and management expertise which may count a worth of billion dollars (Clott, 2004).Outsourcing not only allows an organisation to achieve goals like cutting delivery times and ensuring accurate shipments, but also promotes competition among service providers and move them to continue renewing their services.Currently a growing interest on outsourcing has been mentioned by massive writings in scholarly journals and popular magazines. The terms outsourcing, third party logistics and contract logistics sounds the same. Traditional logistics activities such as transportation, distribution, warehousing, inventory management, order processing and material handling have been given less importance (Mitra, 2005). There is a need to develop competitive advantage and providing better customer service effectively and efficiently. This can be possible only through contract logistics (Razzaque and Sheng, 1998, updated reference).Third party logistics and customer serviceSadler (2007) defined logistics customer service asthe process of providing goods, information and services to customers in a way that both creates customer satisfaction and is cost-effective to the shipper (p.71).client service has been treated as essential factor in marketing strategy and it creates added value for both their companies and customers (Christopher, 2005). node service is a key way to gain competitive advantage. To compete in this corporate world, companies must provide high levels of logistics services to their customers. Based on a survey conducted by Bolumole (2001) identifies the nine most important aspects of customer service as follows.On-time deliveryOrder accuracyPriceNo product damageEase of order placementCustomer enquiry handlingQualityAvailabilityOrder status informationRegarding the high levels of customer service, Sadler (2007) suggest thatthe economic aim point of customer service level is a little below 100%, beyond this level, the extra benefit to customers is vastly outweighed by the huge extra cost of inventory, hours of opening, staff training and salary, etc (p.72).Gaining competitive advantage through 3plThird party logistics (3pl) can be an effective way share companies to achieve competitive advantages. The main objective of logistics management is to drive the companies in achieving sustainable competitive advantages through impr oved customer service and lower costs. boilers suit 3pl providers can provide a major source of competitive advantages. In other words, a position of gaining superiority over competitors (Christopher, 2005, p.6).Rushton et al. (2000) proposed that companies can achieve competitive advantages through 3pl providers. First, companies may compete as a service leader, which means to gain an advantage over their competitors by providing a number of key logistics service elements to differentiate itself. Meanwhile, the companies may compete as a cost leader where it is trying to utilize its logistics resources to offer the service or product at utmost possible price. Some logistics leverages for pursuing the two competitive advantages have been summarized as follows. To achieve value/differential advantageTo achieve cost/productivity advantageThe logistics leverageTailored serviceDistribution channel strategyReliabilityResponsivenessInformationFlexibilityThe logistics leverageCapacity pu rposeAsset one shotCo-makership/schedule integration woeful inventoryLow wasteTable The two different approaches to gain competitive advantages.Source Rushton et al. (2000, p.33).Christopher (2005) summarizes thatThe source of competitive advantages is found firstly in the ability of the organization to differentiate itself, in the eye of the customer, from its competition and secondly by operating at lowest cost (p.6). emulation is always at the core of the success and failure of the firm. A companys competitiveness can be derived from achieving either a cost advantage or a value advantage, or both of them. The relationship of cost and value between a company, its competitor and its customers, named the Three Cs relationship is illustrated below.CustomersAssets and utilizationCost differentialsAssets and utilizationValueNeeds seeking benefits at acceptable pricesValueCompany CompetitorFigure competitive advantage and the Three CsSource Christopher (2005, p.6).However, a most succe ssful company would seek a competitive position depending on attaining both costs and differentiation advantages. Christopher emphasizes the last step that how to take the company to the top right of the matrix can be the biggest challenge to logistics providers. The occupation of the position of cost and service leader means the company has achieved both service and cost advantages.Service leaderCost and service leaderHighCommodity marketCost leader Value advantageLowLow HighCost advantageFigure logistics and competitive advantageSource Christopher (2005, p.10).The three possible ways for companies to accomplish their competitive strategies are internal activities, acquisitions and strategic alliances. On the other hand through mergers and acquisitions of other possible business may meet their competitive strategy requirements. The major participants in the logistics alliances are manufacturers, retailers and logistics service providers or third party logistics providers. A strateg ic alliance allows a company to take advantage of what it does well and enables it to seek partners who have strengths in other areas (Bagchi Virum, 1998).Supply chain integration with third party logistics providersThe present trend of most of the modern companies is to outsource their logistics activities to third party providers. This is a type of alliance, many of the firms implementing to achieve competitive advantage in the market place (Ratten, 2004).In the recent years just-in-time (JIT) process has gained momentum, which promoted outsourcing. The term integration refers to the degree to which individual parties work together in a cooperative manner to achieve acceptable outcomes (Ratten, 2004). Approaching the third party logistics providers comes under the wider arc integration. 3pl providers encompass a wide range of supply chain services including firms outsourcing, material management and distribution responsibilities (Frohlich and Westbrook, 2001). Nowadays 3pl compan ies are playing more number of roles in extended supply chains such as after-sales support, customer service and reverse logistics (Srinath, 2006). 3pl providers have transformed the roles of distribution centres from storage facilities to channel assemblies by taking care of some repair jobs that do not have sent back to manufacturers (Maltz, 2004).Relationships among TPL providers and members of supply chainsNowadays the relationship between supply chain management and third party logistics service providers has gained some momentum. Here its necessary to discuss how to fill the gaps in understanding of how third party logistics providers should offer their services more effectively to their assigned supply chains. The supply chain is,The network of organisations that are involved, through upstream and downstream linkages, in the different processes and activities that produce value in the form of products and services in the hands of the ultimate customers.-Christopher (2005).The supply chain is a chain consists of networked companies from raw material producers for the consumption of end users. According to Jarzemskis (2006), a TPL provider isAn agent middleman in the logistics channel who enters into a temporary or longer term relationship with some other entity in the logistics channel virtually of the logistics services are purchased on a contract basis (Maltz, 2004). Based on the research by Bhatnagar and Viswanathan (2000), successful partnerships in logistics can be achieved by triadic relationships.Order lead time of grocery retailers in the Indian marketsin a survey of Indian retail industries, Chandra and Sastry (2004) found that 98% of the firms dispatch their goods through a contract with trucking companies, while 11% of them only have their own fleet of trucks and 36% of these firms use third party logistics(3pl) service providers for transportation. The parsimony is expected to grow at 10% over the next 10 years in the areas like chemicals, p harmaceuticals, textile, retail and fast moving consumer goods. The Indian retail giants Reliance and Bharti announced large retail projects in collaboration with Wal-Mart. Also Reliance considering establishing large warehouses in Thailand to take advantage of low cost sourcing from selenium Asia. On the other hand food and grocery retail players like Subhiksha established more than 600 new retail stores in India (Chandra Jain, 2009)Logistics is an important process that minimises costs and improves customer satisfaction (Christopher, 2005). The Indian retail industry is worlds fifth largest one. All retail sectors in India are not purely organised. Especially the retail sector is growing very fastly at a pace of 25-30% annually. This sector is projected to grow from Rs. 35,000 crore in 2004-05 to Rs. 109,000 crore by the end of 2010 (Mitra,2005). Here the author is going to look the retail operational efficiency at the secondary distribution level by measuring the performance o f Indian food retailers logistics operations in terms of order lead time. Order lead time is the time between the customers placing an order and receiving the goods (Srinath, 2006). Here both the suppliers and logistics service providers need to understand two genuine types of lead times. The first one, inbound lead time is the time between the orders placed by the depot and the delivery of goods by the suppliers. On the other hand outbound lead time refers to the time depot and the company stores (Maltz, 2004).According to smith and sparks (2004), logistics has been facing many major changes in the Indian food retail sector including increase in the average size of stores, introduction of new retail store formats (petrol station shops) and the increase in the range of own brand food products3pl operations in IndiaThe greater utilization of third party logistics (3pl) in Indian companies is expected to rule the retail markets in the future years. Its predicted to rise from US $ 1.5 billion in 2008 to US $ 4 billion in 2012. Strategic analysis of 3pl markets in Indian retail sector shows that the market earn US $ 28.1 million in 2005 and predicted to be US 89.8 in 2012 (Kaur, 2009).The Indian economic growth has recorded significant development during the past several years. According to the survey conducted by Lieb in 2007, six of the CEOs were asked to identify the best suitable industries which will offer good results for the future of 3pl services usage in India. four of them suggested automotive industry and three of them rated high technology. On the other hand retailing and pharmaceutical industry were preferred by two of them.According to Lieb dogged trip times for relatively short transportation distances make a turnaround of vehicles impossible and increases the cost of domestic transportation. Congestion, toll road blocks and local tax make proper planning and timing, and central distribution structures impossible.Inwarding processThis process is to check out smooth movement of stock and merchandise from warehouse, vendors and any other location to shop floor, updating the inventory and subsequently be available for sale. Goods are received according to the Stock Transfer Note (STN) issued by the warehouse. Every sunrise the Warehouse Incharge prints the mail from SCM support, which gives the details of the merchandise which is scheduled to reach the store (e.g. Goods in transit report). Based on the information the Warehouse incharge to allocate billet for the in transit merchandise do all follow ups for goods in transit. Inform the respective Department Managers about the merchandise scheduled, so that floor blank space for the same can be created, if required. Delivery vehicle arrives at the store warehouse. Security personnel to receive the supporting documents and handover the same to the warehouse personnel set about the Inwarding. Document set is checked by warehouse personnel to ensure it contains a Stock Tran sfer Note (STN) in duplicate and an outward gate pass issued by the dispatching warehouse. An authorised LR copy incase the goods delivery vehicle is a private transporter. Security at stores will sign the gate pass and write manual IRN (Inward Register Number) on gate pass. Security personnel to check the vehicle to ensure the seal on the cargo area are intact and secure. If any of the above documents are missing the staff should inform the Warehouse Manager, and the same should be entered in the discrepancy register. Warehouse Manager to inform the dispatching warehouse in charge and try to resolve the issue, and receive the missing documents by the next day. Under NO circumstances, the merchandise should be inwarded, in variation to the above.OutwardingThis process is to ensure smooth movement of stock and merchandise stores to warehouse, vendors and any other location and updating the inventory. This process starts when Front End folk / Category / store logistics creates a STO for the transfer of merchandise. This process ends when the Store receives goods receipts details from the receiving site. This process is triggered when the Front end Category/Store Logistic Person/Retail Category identifies products to be sent back to CDC or Vendor. Any returns from the Store should be process oriented. There may be various reasons for returns like Defects sent back to the warehouse, due to excess inventory, non- moving stocks, Interstore transfer, back to vendor, Products replaced completely for the customers having same defects or products partly replaced for the Customers, excess material in the Store received as Backup Stocks in Original Packing Condition and Materials might be received directly by the Warehouse from the Customers as replacement where the Warehouse should ensure that it is duly packed and bar coded in proper conditions. Returns to Vendors to be made as per the terms and conditions agreed with the Vendor. If delivery is going from the Store, t he product postulate to be properly packed in corrugated cartons, after doing a Pre Delivery Inspection (PDI) at Store level one day in prove and be certified by the DM/Warehouse Incharge. Any outwarding to be done only after the permission is given from the FEC and store manager and the supply chain team to be kept in the loop. (Vaidyanathan, 2005).Drivers for 3pl usage in IndiaEven though the reasons for outsourcing and the activities involved may vary from one company to another, the basic driving factors are the same. In India, Sahay and Mohan (2006) classify the reasons that drive Indian organizations to outsource logistics into three categories. The primary factor is the concern regarding cost that focuses on logistics cost reduction. The second one is focus on core competencies, access to unfamiliar markets and corporate restructuring. The third issue is associated with up supply chain efficiency, which will cover improving customer services, increasing inventory, driving p roductivity improvements, achieving flexibility in operations and improving return on assets. The primary drivers in the beginning were to reduce costs and release capital. But nowadays its to increase market coverage, improve the customer service level or increase the flexibility towards the changing customer expectations (Skjoett-Larsen, 2000). easeRe-engineeringStrategic flexibilityOutsourcingConcentrate on core businessReduce costFigure driving factors of outsourcing.Source Taglisapietra et al (1999) p.4It is one of the top reasons for outsourcing researched by the outsourcing institute (2000). According to Lankford Parsa (1999)Reengineering is the fundamental rethinking and radical redesign of business processes to achieve dramatic improvements in critical, contemporary measures of performance, such as cost, quality, service and speed. (p.23).Outsourcing not only allows enterprises to grab the benefits of structural changes, but also allows them to take advantage of reengineere d world-class providers.Elements for successful 3pl relationshipsA successful partnership is like a successful marriage, which requires hard work from both the parties involved. Both the parties must understand each others needs and should be compatible with the values. Bagchi Virum (1998) identifies that information sharing is crucial for successful relationship between providers and users. The main elements of long-term successful relationships are compatibility, understanding of partners business needs, open communications, commitment, fairness, flexibility and trust. Based on case studies, Bagchi Virum (1998), identify six factors to the successful third-party relationships.Customer satisfaction is the key point of the relationship in all efforts. Customers need to clearly point out their needs and wants. Then its the turn for providers to understand these needs and acquire the capabilities.People are the important assets in an alliance. Also they should be well trained and mo tivated individuals

Brain Development And The Process Of Learning Languages Psychology Essay
Brain outgrowth And The Process Of Learning Languages Psychology EssayA baby speaks right off to the camera Look at this. Im a free man. I go anywhere I want now. He describes his stock-buying activities, but then his phone interrupts. lasting Hang on a second. He answers his phone. Hey, girl do-nothing I hit you back? That scenario has been very common in commercials and movies throughout the past 15 geezerhood in which the majority of viewers perceive it as unrealistic and very comical. Joshua Hartshorne published a article called Why Dont Babies Talk Like Adults? in Scientific American Mind which attempts to answer the question Why dont young children express themselves articulately?Researchers are uncovering clues about the brain development and the dismal process of learning a language by attempting to answer the question Why dont young children express themselves articulately?, in which they have discarded the aper theory. Which states that infants learn to express them selves articulately by copying what they hear. In other oral communication infants will listen to the words that are used by adults in several situations and later on imitate them accordingly. But adults have not been expressing them in one word sentences or even in short sentences. Therefore, the copycat theory does not explain wherefore toddlers are not fluent as adults, but brings us to a very critical question why do infants speak in one-word sentence? Over the past century scientists have settled on two reasonable possibilities. First theory is called kind Development Hypothesis which states that infants speaks in one word or short sentences because their brains are still im raise and much undeveloped. Therefore, they cannot dominate adult speech. The supporting parameter is that infants do not learn to walk until their body is ready likewise, they will not speak multiword sentences or use word ending and function words earlier their brains is capable of doing so. The sec ond theory is called Stages of Language hypothesis, which states that speech is an incremental step progress. A basketball player his or her jump shot before learning to both jump and shoot, and children learn to add and then multiply, never in the reverse order. For instance, in a 1997 review article published by two cognitive scientists, Elizabeth Bates of University of San Diego and Judith C. Goodman from University of Columbia found that kids usually begins speaking in two word sentences only after they have learned a reliable amount of single words. In other words children must cross a linguistic threshold so the word combination process can be developed. The differences between both theories are Mental Development Hypothesis states the patterns in language learning should depend on a childs level of cognitive development and Stages of Language Hypothesis states that learning language patterns are not dependable on the brain development. However, to prove which has hypothesis is correct has been extremely unwieldy because most children learn language at around the same age, thus in similar stages of cognitive development. But 2007 Harvard neuroscientists Jesse Snedeker, Joy Garen and Clarissa L. Shafto found an ingenious counseling around the problem. They studied the language development of 27 children adopted from China between the ages of two and five years. International adoptees are ideal population in which to test the competing hypothesis about how language is learned because many of them are no longer exposed to their birth language after arrival in U.S and they must learn English similar way infants do, by listening and by trial and error. Even though those international children had a more mature brain, just as American born infants, their first English sentences consisted of single words and were largely bereft of function words, word endings and verbs. The researchers also found that adoptees and indigen children started combining words i n sentences when their vocabulary reached the same size. Therefore, it suggests that what is relevant is not how old a child is or how mature their brains are but the chassis of words they know. The finding that having a more mature brain does not avoid the toddler talk stage suggests that infants speaks in one word sentences or even short sentence not because they have a infant brain but because they having only initiated the process of learning an language. In fact they must accrue sufficient vocabulary to be able to expand their conservations. In conclusion infants do not express themselves as adults because language development is a gradual process. Therefore, Stages of Language Hypothesis is the most supported theory. The article Why Dont babies Talk Like Adults By Joshua Hartshorne was published Scientific American Mind. Scientific American Mind has been bringing its readers unique insights about developments in science and technology for more than 160 years therefore I had cu riosity analyze the tuition that has been shared with so many readers throughout years. The structure of the article was not very organized. I had to read the article more than once so I could identify theories of language development therefore the structure of his article made it difficult for the reader to identify his main arguments. Although, Hartshorne does very good job in introducing, explaining and concluding each theory. He also provides his reader with a scientific research conducted by Harvard neuroscientists that analysis The Adoption Effect. He should have explained a weensy more in knowledge about experiment procedures so the readers could know how it was conducted. Also in his conclusion he does not tie the his final arguments to the initial question Why dont young children express themselves articulately? But he leaves it to the reader to tie it together. I did not agree to the sentence Behaviorism, the scientific progression that dominate American cognitive sci ence for the first half of the 20th century, made exactly this argument. It is very inaccurate to claim that behaviorism ever dominated cognitive science because Cognitive science is one approach to the study of human behavior, Behaviorism another approach. He should have explained more in depth that cognitive science which is normally chosen to contrast with the approach taken by behaviorists, who preferred to study behavior without recourse to such notions as belief or the mind. Future research made me acknowledge that behaviorism and cognitive science co-exist, with behaviorism being the elder approach by fifty years or so. Overall, his article was informative and correct although should have been more scientific. Joshua Hartshorne also did not go into the mechanical or scientific area of language Development therefore it provoked me to research the topic more into depth which seems to be the purpose of Scientific Mind articles.

Gilead: A Credible Society Essay -- Essays Papers
Gilead A Credible SocietyIn Margargont Atwoods novel The Handmaids Tale, a nightclub whose figures argon functional and applicatory roles is depicted. In Atwoods eyes, a parliamentary procedure like Gileads was perfectly credible, and in many ways I agree with her. The purpose of writing about such a radical society is not for one to panic into envisageing that this could happen any time, nor is it for one to completely eject the idea. Instead, its purpose is solely to warn us of the dangers already present in our own society, such as the uncontrollable violence that is going on, apparent on crimes, wars, racism, etc.Offred, the narrator, tells us about a society which came into existence in the early 80s as a direct consequence of overlooking the many problems in its previous society. Before the first steps were being taken to actu all in ally destroy the society that few knew was already on the edge of becoming anarchical, thither was foreshadowing of what would happen right downstairs the eyes of everyone. Riots were going on all the time, great deal were vanishing, and later women lost their jobs and their money. All these things happened without peoples objections, because they were simply ignoring it, possibly hoping that it could not get worst. As Offred later describes how they set about up to those problems, We lived, as usual, by ignoring. Ignoring isnt the same as ignorance, you stomach to work at it (74). This quote described what people did when they were fearsome of something, which they had already permitted to become the usual, daunted them. Ignoring what one fears makes that thing seem normal, and usually one becomes less afraid of things as they become normal. However, if things are do by to an extreme and one does not mission to draw play the line, things can get out of hand when it is already too late. Offred regrets having been like the rest of the society that was banished, because looking back, what was happenin g then was in fact foreshadowing the future, Nothing changes instantaneously in a gradually heating bathtub youd be poached to death before you knew it. There were stories in the newspapers, of course, corpses in ditches or the woods, bludgeoned to death or mutilated, . . . The newspaper stories were like dreams to us, bad dreams dreamt by others . . . they were awful without being believable. . . . they had a dimension that was no... ...illions of Americans crying out. Nor would it be feasible that someone kill the president by simply entering his house. The problem is that these differences mean little when there are also many similarities. The purpose Atwood motto in her book is to warn us of our own dangers, not to compare them to a fictitious story and declare ignoring things. As I said before, I do not think we will ever have such an awful transformation in our lives, moreover I do not think something similar is impossible to occur. Because we are all bei ng blind, like the other society was blind, and we ignore things like violence, we are building ourselves a path with no solid foundations. If we continue doing so, the tendency is for this path to fall apart. Even if this actually happened, it does not necessarily mean that we would have to give in to losing what is ours by all rights. Nevertheless, if we fall in a trend where everything is so casual that we ignore what is going on, something else could happen where we could forget to draw the limit and make it stop, as the society preceding Gilead did. Not Looking at Pictures - Not Reading Texts :: Reading Art Writing Theory
Not Looking at Pictures - Not Reading Texts Here are devil persons in an open, empty space. Bound by walls, they are its contents. Now they exit, walking down corridor after corridor, filling and emptying rooms as they go. Four feet scrub the floor in steps two beat regularly, forming measures, and two more land off the beat, sounding irregularly, introducing syncopation but when the steps intersect-as they now do-there is diaphony, which displaces our fund of the sounds that preceded it. A difficult rest follows, only to be broken by the falling of an uncertain limb, which thuds and drags, thuds then drags . . . . The music stops we hear silence and take over stillness. The sound of laughter forces our eyes open. We see that two men stand side by side, facing a common wall. Standing behind them, we ourselves behold their object, a painting, and our eyes enter its frame. Here a knight has plunged a spear, a foreign object, into a small tophuss neck, as a fair adult female look s on. The faces of the knight and the woman make no clear expression, but the dragon bears its fangs. One among the three has been invaded, and only one has sensed the invasion only the dragon opens its jaw and, at this frozen moment, one sound alone is signified. Our eyes exit the frame and return to the room, where two men still stand. We walk round them to see their eyes and find both sets in motion, yet they move differently. While two paired eyes seem to move easily crossways the canvas, the other pair struggle-these eyes dart, they dash and now the eyes appear to relax on a plane beyond the painting, beyond the wall on which it hangs. Pictures, writes E.M. Forster, bringing us into Not Looking at Pictures, are not easy to look at (130). Standing in the gallery, we are inclined to entrust him, having seen St. George and the Dragon as colorless subjects and objects intermediated by verbs here no paint has dried. Yet there must be some paint in Forsters essay, and we would pre ferably see it than watch his walls go bare, for ours would go bare, too. Where Forster imagines that the dragon utters some silly things, we too have brought imagination to bear on the pick up where Forsters vision of the picture had amazed Roger Fry that anyone could go so completely off the lines (131), the play of our eyes in space might have troubled the critic no less.
